Celebrating a record-breaking victory for recycling
In partnership with the University of Tennessee’s Good Sports Always Give Back program, we set a world record for recycling with 38,452 pounds in 2022. We beat that record in 2023 when we challenged the University of Michigan and recycled 44,950 pounds of game day waste.
We’re hoping to do it again. This year, Saturday November 9th, we’re challenging ourselves and our fans to help us break our own game day recycling record during the Mississippi State Bulldogs game. The 3-peat is in our hands! Let’s put it in the recycling bins!!
These record-breaking achievements means we’re recycling more plastic, aluminum, paper products, cardboard and wooden pallets, as well as composting food waste and collecting food donations. By reusing and recycling, we're keeping valuable materials out of landfills and creating a greener, cleaner future.
As Coach Heupel said, “let’s set a world record for the 3rd year in a row. A Tennessee Trifecta!”
Joining forces for a cleaner tomorrow
In our 2023 competition, fans from Tennessee and Michigan helped divert a combined total of 85,211 pounds of game day waste from going to the landfill, demonstrating the power of unity and environmental responsibility. While we’re not competing against another team this year, we’re still bringing fans together to think about recycling game day waste and help make a positive impact on our planet.

Good sports always give back — to the environment.
As a founding partner of the University of Tennessee’s Good Sports Always Give Back program, Eastman gave UT football fans in Knoxville a glimpse into the next generation of recycling. |
The plastic that fans recycled at the games was sent to Kingsport, Tennessee, at Eastman’s headquarters to be recycled via the company's molecular recycling technologies. As a thank you for recycling, fans who registered online received a commemorative Eastman Tritan™ Renew bottle. Thanks to the fans’ commitment to recycling cups and bottles at Neyland Stadium, Eastman made more materials for reusable items like the 100-year commemorative CamelBak Power T bottle.
Traditional mechanical recycling (the curbside recycling we’re all familiar with) is great when it can be used. But there are hundreds of different types of plastic, and mechanical recycling is limited in the types of plastic it can recycle. Only 12% of the 260 million metric tons of plastic waste collected annually, around 31.2 million metric tons, gets mechanically recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators or the environment. Molecular recycling is a next-generation recycling innovation that can recycle almost any kind of plastic — making it a critical element for solving the global challenge of plastic waste.
About Good Sports Always Give Back
Since 1993, Eastman, along with supporting partners Food City, Tennessee Recycling and Waste Connections, has called on the Big Orange faithful to deposit their plastic PET cups and bottles into orange recycling bins located throughout Neyland Stadium.
Revolutionizing recycling is not a dream. We are making it a reality and showing the world what’s possible.
East Tennessee is at the forefront of molecular recycling. Eastman has already recycled millions of pounds of plastic with its molecular recycling technologies and is rapidly expanding this recycling innovation with some of the world’s leading brands — including Procter & Gamble, Stanley Black & Decker, Nalgene, and LVMH — now using Eastman Renew materials.
Eastman is investing $250 million to build the world’s largest plastic-to-plastic molecular recycling facility in Kingsport, Tennessee. The facility will use more than 110,000 metric tons of plastic waste as raw material with a very high efficiency rate. That’s enough plastic to fill Neyland Stadium with the equivalent of 11 billion single-use water bottles, 790 million polyester T-shirts or 2.7 billion shampoo bottles. We will create value from plastics that can’t be recycled today, diverting them from landfills, incinerators or ending up in our environment. They can be renewed over and over again without degradation in quality and with no compromise in performance — and operate with 20%–30% lower carbon emissions compared to manufacturing processes that use fossil-based resources such as coal or oil.
